The following is from a recent appeal letter from Francis of Assisi Society Chairwoman, Magdalena Usategui

Dear Friends,

I would like to share with you some information about Francis of Assisi Society, which I founded in November, 2005.
I would like to summarize our work:

1. We have rescued abandoned cats and kittens, brought them into foster homes and found permanent homes for them.
2. A number of feral cats were spayed or neutered, vaccinated and released. The families that called us for help continue to feed them. A number of feral kittens were able to be socialized and were adopted into permanent, loving homes.
3. A lot of effort has been placed in going door to door in the low income neighborhoods to make them aware of the Vermont Spay Neuter Incentive Program "VSNIP". We help to fill out the applications and mail them. When the approval comes back from the state, in many cases we have to transport the cats to and from the veterinarians, as many of these families do not have cars.
4. In visiting the low-income neighborhoods, we have encountered sick cats that need immediate veterinary care. It is heartbreaking to find animals suffering and in pain. Also, in a number of cases the families have more cats and kittens than they can afford. Usually, they are willing to give some of them to Francis of Assisi Society. It is sad to see the condition of some of the animals when they come to us, as well as the conditions in the homes we visit.
5. We started a new program in 2008 "Partners for Life". This program will allow handicapped and senior citizens to have a cat, a companion to love and be loved, with our help in caring for the animals.

I firmly believe that with the help from friends like you, Francis of Assisi Society will succeed in Bennington County in eradicating the existence of abandoned animals and the suffering of animals living in impoverished areas. Once we succeed, we will have a working model to pass along to other counties in Vermont and elsewhere.

Thank you for your donation. The animals will greatly appreciate it.
